Two Girls and a Tent – then No Tent (June 2, 2022)

Our most recent camping trip wasn’t supposed to be an adventure, but Mother Nature had other plans. We had the most wonderful day surfing, swimming, and of course enjoying all of our favorites at Ocean City: crepes from Bayside Skillet, French fries from Thrashers, and ice cream from Dumsers Dairyland. Then off we went to set up camp at Assateague. It took a while, but we got our new gigantic 9-person tent set up and ready for the night.

It was an absolutely beautiful day, so we walked down to the ocean to swim some more, and we were beyond thrilled to see a family of wild ponies on the beach. AND there was a baby!!! It honestly made our already perfect day complete.

On our way to the market to grab the essentials (firewood and marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers for s’mores), severe thunderstorm warnings repeatedly came across the radio, but we were hopeful that the storms would pass us by. No such luck. As the sky became darker and more ominous by the minute, we quickly returned to the campsite, built a “raging” fire, gobbled up our s’mores, and then battened down the hatches (or at least tried to). The wind picked up, and so did the tent – LIKE A PARACHUTE! And yes, in case you’re wondering, it was staked down. Thankfully, Olivia was able to grab it before it flew off to the depths of the sea (or into the fire), but there was no saving the poles that snapped into pieces. Our tenting adventures are definitely memorable!

But as it turned out, we had the most wonderful time camping in the car…again. We played board games, watched a movie, and had lots and lots of girl chats and giggles. It may not have been the camping night we anticipated, but it ended better than we ever could have dreamed. And the perfect ending to our amazing, unexpected adventure?? Sunrise WITH THE PONIES the next day. It doesn’t get any better – at least not for these two girls who love horses and the ocean and girl time more than could ever be expressed in this post.
